How to Conduct an Email Search Online By Jay Moreson

We've all received emails from addresses we simply cannot identify at a glance. We look at the mystery message wondering if it's from a friend or family member who is using a new address, is it from a company with whom we already do business and we'd like to hear about an order we've made or a possible promotion in the future, or is it from a spammer who is trying to trick you into seeing their message, attach spyware or malware to your computer so they can track all of your online behaviors, or drop a virus into your hard drive to wreak havoc on your programs and data?

Just looking at the email makes it very hard to tell whether or not you would really like to open it and risk exposing yourself and your computer to unwanted message contents.

To really find out if this message is something worthwhile or if it's something that belongs in your deleted messages folder, you'll want to dig a bit deeper. Without opening the message, check out the properties of the email by looking at the email header. This will reveal the actual email address from which the message was sent (because the one that you're seeing in your inbox list may actually be a disguised email address and not the one that was actually used to send).

Once you have the actual email address, you can use many resources to identify where it truly came from. You may want to head to MyFreeEmailSearch.com which offers you several opportunities to learn about email addresses.

For example, you can use a search engine to find out if the email address has appeared on any websites online as a personal or business address. Or, it might even appear on a site that reports spammer addresses that are tricky to identify. Of course, this is limited to the addresses that have actually been mentioned on a website. You may also wish to use a social networking or professional networking website to use their reverse email search abilities and see if the address you're looking for appears with a profile member on any of those sites.

If all else fails, you can also choose to head to a premium email search site that will give you access to a substantial searchable directory database.
